To choose a
M.tech Thesis Adviser and Topic is one of the greatest and important decisions
that you will be taking and this decision will surely effect your educational
outcome [as well as your learning experience]. My suggestion is to choose an
expert by the end of the 2nd semester (winter semester) of your academic
program. Start your M.tech Thesis
research work from the month of May [1st Year] and submit your Thesis by the
month of May [2nd Year] (set a goal of one complete year [reasonable and
attainable]: Summer [3 Months] + winter [4.5 Months] + Monsoon [4.5
Months]). The Institute does not assign
mentor to the student and the student has to choose the mentor [it is student’s
responsibility to choose a mentor] (and the mentor also has a choice to
accept/decline). Any delay in selecting [or changing] a mentor and topic will
naturally result in delay in submission of your M.tech Thesis.
My suggestion is
that mentor selection should be based on both your research interests as well
as compatibility (fitment in-terms of working-style and choice: Mentor-Student
is also a long-term relationship and needs a match to be successful). Same
research interest and compatibility [keep both the points in mind] can be
examined by taking classes of prospective supervisors during your first two
semester and/or serving as TA (teaching assistant), reading about Teachers work
from information easily available in public domain (publications, thesis
guided, details on homepage), talking to current and graduated students of a
Teacher [track record and feedback] and meeting in person. A student's M.Tech Thesis is a very crucial part of
their degree and students must be very careful while choosing their M.tech
thesis mentor/Guide.
